6 storeys Hostel block

This project (the first privatised hostel project within Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia compus built under the 7^th Malaysia Plan's guideline), consists of 15 hostel blocks and an Administration building with an assembly hall and other facilities, covering an area of 17.10 acres.

The project, undertaken initially by Alumni UKM Sdn. Bhd. was meant to partly resolve the serious shortage of accommodation for UKM students.

The fifteen 6 storey hostel blocks were designed to be accessed through second floor (to avoid LIFTs which are expensive and have long maintenance cost) via a link bridge from the road at 2^nd floor level. As a result, elaborate earthwork was done to blend with the existing undulating terrain.

Reinforced concrete Wall slab system was the structural system for the 6 storeys hostel blocks. A mixture of 100mm and 150mm thick reinforced concrete wall were used to support the 100mm floor slab.

The structural system used for the 7 storeys administration building is reinforced concrete structural frame with column grid at 6.0m supported by Pad Footing foundation. It has an assembly hall of 30m x 30m clear, covered by a 42.4m clear span pyramidal steel roof truss system. The main roof truss maximum depth is 3m with the use of 150x150x5mm square steel hollow section as top and bottom chord.

Construction works was started under turnkey concept under BOT scheme in early 1997. However, due to the Asia economical crisis that followed, the project was abandoned in late 1998. Then, 6 hostel blocks (Block 10-15) and Alumni Building have been completed. They were occupied due to shortage of student accommodation.

In 2003, the project was taken over by Unit Pembangunan UKM with an aim to complete the remaining 9 hostel blocks (Block 1 to Block 9).
